(Los Angeles, CA) A 66-year-old man has died after suffering critical injuries earlier this month in a 45th Place collision, according to police.
The Los Angeles Police Department said the crash occurred around 6:55 p.m. on January 12 at the intersection of 45th Place and Western Avenue. Officers later learned the man had been struck while using an unmarked crosswalk.
Investigators said a silver Honda Odyssey van traveling northbound on Western Avenue struck the pedestrian. After the impact, the van continued through the area, last seen heading eastbound on 42nd Place from Western Avenue. The driver did not stop to render aid, police said.
Paramedics transported the injured man to a hospital, where he remained under medical care for several days. LAPD announced Tuesday that the victim had died from his injuries. Authorities have not released his name at this time.
Detectives said the city of Los Angeles continues to offer a standing reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to a conviction in fatal hit-and-run cases. Police released an image of the suspected vehicle as part of their effort to identify the driver.
Analysis on the 45th Place Collision
When a pedestrian is struck in an unmarked crosswalk, investigators review traffic safety laws to understand what factors may have contributed, without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews often focus on right-of-way, driver awareness, and post-crash conduct.
Because the victim was crossing within an unmarked crosswalk, investigators may examine the Pedestrian Right-of-Way Law. This law requires drivers to yield to pedestrians crossing at intersections, whether or not crosswalk markings are present. Drivers approaching intersections must anticipate pedestrian crossings, especially in dense urban corridors.
Authorities will also closely review the Hit-and-Run Law. This law requires drivers involved in collisions resulting in injury or death to stop, provide identifying information, and render reasonable assistance. Leaving the scene after striking a pedestrian can delay medical care and often leads to severe criminal penalties once the driver is identified.
If speed or attentiveness becomes a factor, investigators may consider the Basic Speed Law. This law requires motorists to drive at speeds reasonable for traffic, visibility, and roadway conditions. Together, these statutes guide investigators as they assess what may have led to the 45th Place collision while evidence continues to be reviewed.
