(Woodcrest, CA) A motorcyclist was killed Wednesday evening in a Gardner Avenue collision after an SUV turned in front of him at a busy intersection.

The California Highway Patrol said the crash happened just after 5 p.m. at the intersection of Gardner Avenue and Van Buren Boulevard. Investigators said Brent Hoquist, 35, of Corona rode a Yamaha motorcycle eastbound on Van Buren Boulevard.

CHP Officer Javier Navarro said a 24-year-old Riverside woman driving a Dodge SUV traveled westbound on Van Buren. At some point, she made a left turn toward Gardner Avenue. Hoquist struck the right front of the vehicle. causing him to be ejected from the bike, according to CHP.

Riverside County Fire Department paramedics arrived within minutes and found deputies performing CPR. Despite lifesaving efforts, authorities pronounced Hoquist dead at the scene. The SUV driver stopped immediately, cooperated with investigators, and was not injured. CHP said she was not arrested, and alcohol or drugs did not appear to be factors.

The intersection was partially closed for nearly two hours while officers conducted a preliminary investigation. CHP officers urge anyone with information about the crash to contact the Riverside CHP office.

Opinion on the Gardner Avenue Collision

When a fatal motorcycle crash occurs at an intersection, investigators review traffic safety laws to understand what factors may have contributed, without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews focus on right-of-way decisions, speed, and driver awareness.

Because the SUV was making a left turn across oncoming traffic, investigators may examine the Left Turn Yield Law. This law requires drivers turning left to yield to approaching vehicles that are close enough to pose a hazard. Misjudging distance or speed can leave little time for riders to react.

Since officers said the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed, authorities may also review the Basic Speed Law. This law requires drivers to operate at speeds that are reasonable for traffic, visibility, and roadway conditions. Higher speeds can reduce reaction time and increase the severity of injuries in motorcycle crashes.

Investigators may additionally consider the Reckless Driving Law if evidence shows driving behavior that placed others at risk. Together, these statutes help CHP evaluate what may have led to the Gardner Avenue collision as the investigation continues.

    Support for Hoquist’s Family

You may also consider speaking with a legal professional experienced in fatal motorcycle cases to better understand your options. Emotional support matters, and leaning on family, friends, or local grief counseling resources can help during an especially difficult time.
