Shandon, CA (July 29, 2024) Tragedy swept through the community of Shandon on Sunday night, July 28th, following a wrong-way collision. The collision involved three vehicles and, sadly, claimed three lives that day. Three others were injured in this traumatic collision, officers reported. It happened on State Route 46, near West Centre Street, just before 10:30 p.m.

It was dark as vehicles headed along State Route 46 in Shandon on Sunday night. A 2021 Mercedes was heading west when the vehicle veered into the eastbound lane. A 2022 Honda was heading east and the two vehicles collided, head-on at high rates of speed. Another vehicle was driving behind the Honda and it also hit the Honda, officers reported. The vehicles were all badly damaged and blocking the highway, headlights shining in all directions.

Officers quickly arrived at the scene and found the damaged vehicles on State Route 46. They searched for those in need of medical care and first checked on the Honda, which was hit by two different vehicles. Four people were inside the vehicle and officers reported that three of them were dead. They found three other people with injuries, reports indicated and transported two of them to a local hospital to receive treatment. The third victim sustained only minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Update: The deceased victims have been identified as 24-year-old Rosalinda Bucio, 27-year-old Francisco J. Polinasainz, and 32-year-old Yvette Guzman.

They do not believe that drugs or alcohol played a role in this collision and are working diligently to learn what happened. Tow trucks had to come and remove the destroyed vehicles from the roadway and crews spent hours cleaning up glass and debris that was left behind.
