(Los Angeles, CA) A 68-year-old man was killed late Monday night, November 17, in a West 76th Street collision after another driver allegedly ran a red light while under the influence of alcohol in South Los Angeles, police said.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the crash occurred around 10:27 p.m. at the intersection of West 76th Street and Broadway. Investigators said a southbound Chevrolet Trax ran a red light and collided with an eastbound Toyota Camry.

When paramedics arrived, they rushed the man driving the Camry to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The suspect, who police say showed signs of alcohol intoxication, suffered minor injuries and was booked on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and DUI.

The LAPD did not immediately release the suspect’s name or additional details about the investigation.

Overview on the West 76th Street Collision

When alcohol is suspected in a fatal crash, investigators apply the Driving Under the Influence Law. This law prohibits operating a vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs. If impairment leads to a fatality, it can elevate to vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated under California Penal Code 191.5, a serious felony offense.

Because the driver allegedly ran a red light, the Red-Light Violation Law is also relevant. It requires motorists to stop completely at red lights before proceeding when safe. Disregarding this rule can cause severe side-impact collisions like the one seen in this case.

Lastly, the Basic Speed Law requires drivers to maintain speeds that are safe for existing conditions. Even when impairment is a factor, speed often compounds the severity of a crash. These statutes will guide investigators as they determine fault in the West 76th Street collision.

    Support for the Family

You should remain in contact with the Los Angeles Police Department’s South Traffic Division for updates and to obtain the collision report once it is finalized. This report will clarify how the incident occurred and assist in any legal or insurance matters that follow.

Consider consulting a victims’ rights or wrongful-death attorney who can explain your options for seeking justice and compensation. They can work alongside investigators to ensure your family’s voice is heard.

Finally, allow yourself space to grieve and seek support from those around you. Connecting with local community centers, grief counselors, or faith-based organizations in Los Angeles can provide emotional comfort and practical guidance during this painful time.

If you have any concerns about navigating the legal process surrounding this incident, call 866-883-4318 to speak with a lawyer.
