(Los Angeles, California) Around 11:53 p.m., on October 13th,  the Los Angeles deputy vehicle was going westbound on 120th street when it hit a black hatchback vehicle causing all three people involved to be hospitalized.

After the deputy vehicle struck the black hatchback vehicle, the vehicle then veered to the right  and hit a fire hydrant, spewing water. Due to the collision, a power outrage occurred in the area where the collision took place. The two deputies and the hatchback driver were hospitalized with minor injuries.

Shortly after, the two Los Angeles deputies were discharged from the hospital but there has been no confirmation on what conditions the driver of the hatchback is currently in.

Legal Analysis on the Vermont Avenue Crash

When a collision involves authorities who caused the accident, investigators may review Public Agencies Laws to determine whether they would be liable or not.

Because the Los Angeles deputies hit the black hatchback vehicle, resulting in an injury, they may be liable for the driver’s injury and for causing the fire hydrant to spew water. California Vehicle Code 17001 discusses that public entities are liable for injuries, death, or property approximately due to negligence or wrongful act by an employee to the public entity.

It is also possible that the deputy driver was tailgating the black hatchback driver resulting in the collision between the two vehicles. If that was the case, the deputy driver violated the California Vehicle Code 21703. This law discusses that no vehicle should follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable or prudent.
