Richmond, CA (October 10, 2023) The California Highway Patrol said that at least 1 person is dead after a big rig slammed into a toll booth. The collision occurred just before 10:00 p.m. on Monday, October 9th, on Interstate 580.
The accident happened between Contra Costa County and Marin County on the westbound lanes of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. Witnesses at the scene told California Highway Patrol officers that the truck was swerving back and forth before it crashed into the toll booth. The big rig and the toll booth went up in flames following the crash. The CHP told ABC 7 News that they had to remove the semi truck’s engine.

The driver of the semi was killed in this collision. A crane had to be brought to the scene to remove the damaged truck. The toll booth sustained major damage as well.
Authorities are still investigating in hopes of learning what actually happened.
