(Montebello, CA) A woman was killed and a man hospitalized late Wednesday night, November 12, in a Pomona Freeway accident that involved multiple vehicles on the eastbound 60 Freeway in Montebello, authorities said.

According to the California Highway Patrol, officers responded to the crash around 10:42 p.m. near Atlantic Boulevard. The collision involved an orange Dodge Charger and a Nissan SUV, both of which sustained major damage.

CHP Officer Elizabeth Kravig said the woman driving the Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. The driver of the Charger was taken to a hospital by Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics, though his condition was not immediately available.

Authorities issued a SigAlert shortly after the crash, closing all eastbound lanes of the Pomona Freeway for several hours while investigators processed the scene. The cause of the collision remains under investigation.

Overview on the Pomona Freeway Accident

When two vehicles collide at high speeds on a freeway, investigators often begin with the Basic Speed Law. This statute requires motorists to drive at a safe speed for traffic, weather, and road conditions—regardless of posted limits. If either vehicle was traveling too fast for nighttime freeway conditions, that could be a contributing factor.

If one driver made a dangerous maneuver before the crash, the Unsafe Lane Change Law may apply. It requires drivers to signal and ensure the lane is clear before moving over. On busy freeways like the 60, a sudden lane change can easily trigger a severe collision.

Additionally, the Right-of-Way and Merging Rule governs vehicles entering or crossing traffic lanes. Investigators will examine the crash sequence to determine whether either driver failed to yield properly. These statutes will help the CHP establish the cause of the Pomona Freeway accident.

    Support for the Family

You should stay in contact with the California Highway Patrol’s East Los Angeles Area Office for updates on the investigation and to request a copy of the official collision report when it becomes available. This document can provide your family with important details about the incident.

When you feel ready, consider consulting an attorney experienced in freeway or wrongful-death cases. They can explain your family’s legal options and help ensure accountability in this tragic situation.

In the meantime, focus on emotional healing and support. Lean on friends, relatives, and grief-counseling services in Montebello as you remember and honor your loved one’s life.
