Los Banos, CA (July 8, 2024) Tragedy struck the community of Los Banos on Thursday, July 4th, when one person was killed in a two-vehicle collision. The accident took place on Canal School Road, just north of Highway 33.  The fatal collision also left three people with injuries, officers reported.

A 2017 Nissan, driven by a 22-year-old man, was heading along Canal School Road, in the southbound lanes on July 4th. At the same time, a 2002 Chevrolet was headed north on the same road, officers reported. Suddenly, the Nissan began to drift and crossed over the double yellow lines. It ended up in the northbound lanes, right in the path of the Chevy. The driver of the Chevrolet had no time to react and the two vehicles collided, head-on. The force from the collision sent the Chevy rolling onto its roof. The Nissan also rolled over, but landed on its wheels, according to reports.

Emergency personnel arrived at the scene and found the two badly damaged vehicles. Officers rushed to the vehicles, ready to give medical aid to anyone in need. The driver of the Nissan was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision and was thrown from the vehicle, officers reported. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Paramedics found three other people with injuries ranging from minor to serious, reports indicated. All three were rushed to a local hospital to receive emergency treatment.

Update: The Nissan driver has been identified as Cristián Castillo Acosta.

The driver of the Chevrolet is a 36-year-old man from Stockton. His passenger was a 34-year-old female who was left with major injuries. There was also a juvenile in the car who sustained minor injuries.

The California Highway Patrol is leading this investigation and do not suspect that drugs or alcohol were factors in this accident. They are working to understand why the Nissan drifted into oncoming traffic that day in Los Banos. Officers requested tow trucks to come to the scene and remove the damaged vehicles from the roadway. Crews worked as quickly as they could to remove the glass and debris from the scene once the investigation was complete.
