Studio City, Los Angeles, CA (April 15, 2024) The 101 Freeway in Studio City was the scene of a deadly crash early this morning. The fatal accident occurred on the north side of the freeway, near Lankershim Boulevard, reports indicated. Los Angeles Fire Department recruit Jacob Fuerte, 22, tragically lost his life and several others were injured in this multi-vehicle accident.
It was early enough in the morning that it was still dark as vehicles headed up and down the 101 Freeway in the Studio City Area of Los Angeles. Traffic flowed along at a good pace until, for reasons still unknown, Fuerte’s Jeep slammed into the back of a 2021 Ford truck carrying porta potties, just after 5:00 a.m. The pickup was driven by 36-year-old Derek Tapia, of Montclair, who wasn’t injured in the crash.
Officers said that Fuerte stepped out of his Jeep following the collision in the middle of the freeway. Suddenly, as vehicles attempted to go around the collision, another wreck took place. Fuerte, who was now outside his vehicle, was hit by one of the cars in the second collision, reports indicated. The vehicles ended up completely blocking two lanes and partially blocking a third lane following the collision.
Emergency crews hurried to the 101 Freeway where they found the vehicles smashed together in the middle of the roadway. They quickly blocked off every lane of the freeway, but one, with orange cones and issued a SigAlert. Fuerte was found lying in the middle of the freeway with fatal injuries. There was nothing paramedics could do. Officials sadly pronounced Fuerte dead at the scene and called for the coroner. His body was covered with an American flag following this horrible accident.
Several others received moderate to major injuries in the second collision. The exact number of victims injured has not be released, but officers said that more than multiple people were taken to local hospitals to receive treatment for injuries they received in the collision.
Tow trucks were called to the scene to remove the damaged vehicles and debris and glass had to be cleared from the roadway before officers could re-open the lanes. Officers investigated the collision, gathered evidence and spoke with those involved, as well as witnesses. They are determined to figure out what caused this accident as well as who was at fault.
