(Mecca, CA) A 70th Street crash resulted in the death of Maria Moreno de Hernandez, 58, of Mecca early Monday morning, November 24, after colliding with a tractor-trailer.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly before 6 a.m., near Garfield Street. Upon investigation, authorities learned a red Kubota tractor-trailer hauling a flatbed traveled westbound on 70th Street. AT the same time, Hernandez, who drove a Ford Ranger pickup, struck the rear of the trailer for reasons still under investigation.

Emergency responders arrived and pronounced Hernandez dead at the scene. CHP officials said she wore her seatbelt at the time of the crash. The 21-year-old man driving the tractor-trailer, also from Mecca, was not reported injured.

Authorities said drugs and alcohol did not play a role in the collision. Police closed Avenue 70 between Wheeler and Garfield streets while investigators processed the scene.

Overview on the 70th Street Crash

In collisions involving slower-moving agricultural or commercial vehicles, investigators review several key traffic laws to determine contributing factors. The Following Too Closely Law requires motorists to maintain a safe distance behind another vehicle to prevent rear-end crashes.

The Basic Speed Law also applies, stating that drivers must travel at a speed that is reasonable and prudent for current conditions — especially in rural areas where large machinery or trailers may be present.

Additionally, compliance with the Vehicle Equipment and Load Law is often reviewed to ensure that trailers are properly equipped with lights and reflectors for visibility. These laws help investigators determine how the 70th Street crash occurred and whether it could have been prevented.

    Support for Hernandez’s Family

The family of Maria Moreno de Hernandez should remain in contact with the California Highway Patrol Indio Area Office. They can provide the official collision report once it becomes available. This report will include critical details about the investigation and assist with any insurance or legal processes.

Families may also wish to consult a wrongful-death attorney who specializes in roadway and commercial vehicle accidents to explore their legal options for compensation related to funeral costs and other losses.

Finally, loved ones should seek emotional and community support. Local organizations in Riverside County offer grief counseling and victim assistance programs that can help the family navigate this painful time.

If you have any concerns about navigating the legal process surrounding this incident, call 866-883-4318 to speak with a lawyer.
