Vandenberg Space Force Base, CA (April 17, 2024) A collision involving at least six vehicles occurred on Highway 1 near Vandenberg Space Force Base on Tuesday. Four people were injured in the collision and Highway 1 had to be closed for an extended period of time, officers said.

As vehicles traveled up and down Highway 1 in Santa Barbara County on Tuesday night, a chain of reaction collision occurred. At least six vehicles were involved in this chaotic accident and the aftermath forced officers to close the southbound lanes of the highway. The multi-vehicle accident took place near Vandenberg Space Force Base, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The Santa Barbara County Fire Department arrived at the scene with the California Highway Patrol and Vandenberg Fire Department. Upon arrival they found six vehicles with damage, blocking the southbound lanes of Highway 1. Debris covered the roadway in all directions and emergency personnel rushed to check the vehicles for injured people.

They found one person who had been partially ejected from the vehicle during the collision. The victim had sustained life-threatening injuries and officers called for an air ambulance. They were rushed to Marion Regional Medical Center in critical condition.

Emergency personnel located three other people with injuries following this collision. All three were taken to Marion Regional Medical Center, via ambulance. Two of the victims sustained moderate injuries and the third had minor injuries, according to reports. All three will make a full recovery, medical personnel reported.

Officers gathered evidence and took statements at the scene. They are determined to learn what exactly happened to cause this multi-vehicle collision and who was responsible. Tow trucks were called to remove damaged vehicles from the scene and crews worked diligently to clean the debris and glass from the highway.
