(San Diego, CA) A 24-year-old motorist was hospitalized with serious injuries following a Dayton Street collision in San Diego’s El Cerrito neighborhood Friday night, October 17, according to the San Diego Police Department.

The collision occurred around 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of Dayton Street and El Cajon Boulevard. Investigators said an eastbound Tesla Model Y made a left turn in front of a westbound Honda Civic.

The two vehicles collided in the intersection, leaving the Honda driver with a fractured left femur and a lacerated liver. When paramedics arrived, they transported the injured motorist to a local hospital for treatment. Police said they did not suspect impairment as a factor that led to the crash.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact San Diego Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.

Overview on the Dayton Street Collision

Incidents like these serve as a reminder of how quickly intersection crashes can occur, even in familiar areas. Investigators will likely focus on whether the Tesla driver’s left turn violated the other motorist’s right-of-way.

Under California Vehicle Code 21801, drivers making a left turn must yield to oncoming vehicles that are close enough to pose a hazard. Failing to do so can result in liability for any resulting crash, even if the turning driver believes they had sufficient time or distance.

Additionally, the Basic Speed Law can come into play. It requires all motorists to travel at a speed that is reasonable for conditions, especially when approaching intersections. This law applies equally to both parties, ensuring all drivers exercise caution.

The San Diego Police Department continues to investigate the Dayton Street collision to determine whether driver error, traffic conditions, or other factors led to the crash.

Guidance for the Injured Driver and Family

If your loved one was hurt from this accident, you may request the official police report from the San Diego Police Department’s Traffic Division once the investigation concludes. This report can be crucial for insurance claims and understanding how the collision occurred.

Victims of serious crashes can also contact the San Diego County Victim Assistance Program for support with medical expenses, emotional recovery, and legal guidance. Consulting an experienced personal injury attorney can further help you navigate your rights and ensure fair compensation as your family recovers from the Dayton Street accident.

If you have any concerns about navigating the legal process surrounding this incident, call 866-883-4318 to speak with a lawyer.
