(Cathedral City, CA) An 86-year-old man died early Thursday morning, December 4, from injuries sustained in a Date Palm Drive crash involving two vehicles.

According to the Cathedral City Police Department, the collision occurred around 4:20 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Date Palm Drive and Tachevah Drive. Officers arrived to find two vehicles with significant front-end damage.

When paramedics arrived, they transported both drivers to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs for treatment. One of the motorists, Raymond Johnson, of Cathedral City, was later pronounced dead by hospital staff shortly before 1 a.m. Thursday.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact Officer Jeff Bird at 760-770-0332.

Overview on the Date Palm Drive Crash

When a fatal two-vehicle collision occurs, investigators review several key traffic safety laws to determine contributing factors. The Right-of-Way at Intersections Law requires drivers to yield appropriately when entering or crossing intersections to prevent side-impact or turning collisions.

The Basic Speed Law mandates that motorists drive at speeds that are safe for current traffic, visibility, and roadway conditions. Even when traveling within posted limits, failing to adjust speed to surroundings can still constitute a violation. These statutes will guide police in determining the cause and any potential violations linked to the Date Palm Drive crash.

    Support for Johnson’s Family

The family of Raymond Johnson should stay in contact with the Cathedral City Police Department’s Traffic Division for updates and to obtain the official collision report once it becomes available. This report will provide critical details about the circumstances leading to the crash.

Families who lose loved ones in traffic accidents may also seek assistance through California’s Victim Compensation Board, which can help cover funeral expenses, counseling, and related costs.

Lastly, consider reaching out to a wrongful-death attorney experienced in motor vehicle accidents. Legal guidance can help families understand their rights, preserve evidence, and pursue accountability.

As the Cathedral City community mourns, local grief counseling and senior support services can also provide comfort and resources to those affected by the Date Palm Drive crash.
