Johnson County, TX (December 29, 2023) 17-year-old Luke Resecker, a Glen Rose resident, and Rushil Barri of Irving, were 2 of 6 people killed in a deadly head-on collision in Johnson County. Three other people were injured in this accident that occurred on U.S. Highway 67 between County Road 1234 and County Road 1120, according to Texas State Troopers.

Resecker was driving a white Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck with another teenager as his passenger. He was driving south on Highway 67 where it is only a two-lane road, just south of Cleburne, officers said. State Troopers believe that Resecker’s truck crossed over into oncoming traffic and hit a van, carrying 7 people, head-on.

6 of the 7 people in the van died in this tragic accident, including a 9-year-old girl and a 10-year-old. The other victims were a 60-year-old woman, a 64-year-old man, a 36-year-old woman and 28-year-old Rushil Barri.

Three people were injured in this crash and rushed to John Peter Smith Hospital and Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital. One victim, 26-year-old Lokesh Ptabathula, from Alberta, Georgia, was in critical condition.

Officers said they are still unsure as to what exactly happened on US Highway 67. They said it could have been because the pickup was trying to pass another vehicle or it could have been trying to make a turn. The accident is still being investigated, according to Texas State Troopers.

Liability In Johnson County Car Accidents

Despite improved safety measures for cars, motor vehicle accidents remain one of the leading causes of serious injury and death in the United States.  According to the CDC, “more than 32,000 people are killed and 2 million are injured each year from motor vehicle crashes.” There are a number of factors that could potentially contribute to a car accident including:

    • Speeding
    • Distracted driving
    • Inclement weather
    • Dangerous turns
    • Poorly designed roadways

All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid causing accidents. This is especially true for commercial drivers that work for a city. A number of collisions are due to drivers that make dangerous left turns.

If a negligent driver worked for a city, that city could potentially be liable in the event of an accident. Generally speaking, employers are vicariously liable for the negligent actions of their employees – insofar as those employees were working within the course and scope of their job duties. There are a number of steps that should be taken after a car accident.

    • Photos of the accident site should be taken.
    • Surveillance footage should be sought.
    • Medical records should be preserved.
    • Eye witnesses should be interviewed.
    • A thorough independent investigation should be conducted.

The family of any victim that has died in a car accident may have legal recourse through a bodily injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and funeral expenses. It is essential that evidence is properly preserved after a car accident. A car accident attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
