(Huntington Beach, CA) One person was killed and two others were seriously injured Monday morning, October 20, in a Pacific Coast Highway accident involving a vehicle and multiple bicyclists, according to city officials.

The crash occurred around 6:45 a.m. at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Beach Boulevard. Huntington Beach police received reports of a car striking three cyclists, said Public Affairs Manager Corbin Carson.

By the time authorities and paramedics arrived, they pronounced one of the victims dead at the scene. Two others were taken to nearby hospitals with serious injuries. The driver remained on site and cooperated with investigators. Carson said there are no outstanding suspects and that officials are examining whether alcohol, drugs, or other factors may have contributed to the crash.

Police closed southbound lanes of Pacific Coast Highway at Beach Boulevard during the investigation.

Perspective on the Pacific Coast Highway Accident

Collisions between vehicles and bicyclists are among the most serious roadway incidents, often leading to devastating injuries. This incident has prompted investigators to evaluate visibility, driver behavior, and road design.

When crashes involve bicyclists, California Vehicle Code 21200 is central. This law gives cyclists the same rights and responsibilities as drivers. This requires both parties to follow traffic signals and share the road safely. Drivers must also maintain a safe passing distance, at least three feet, when overtaking a bicycle.

If speed or failure to yield was a contributing factor, the Basic Speed Law may also come into play. It requires drivers to travel at speeds that are safe for the conditions. This can include early-morning glare or heavy bicycle traffic. Investigators will analyze skid marks, witness statements, and vehicle positioning to determine whether unsafe driving behavior played a role.

Authorities will continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses to establish the cause of the Pacific Coast Highway accident and explore whether enhanced safety measures—such as clearer bike lanes or improved signage—could help prevent similar tragedies.

    Support for the Families

Losing a loved one or seeing a family member seriously hurt in such a crash can be overwhelming. Families of the victims in this Pacific Coast Highway accident can request a copy of the official collision report from the Huntington Beach Police Department once the investigation concludes.

You may also contact the Orange County Victim Services Division for counseling, guidance, and financial assistance. Speaking with a wrongful death or personal injury attorney experienced in bicycle accidents may also help you understand your legal options and ensure your family’s rights are protected during this difficult time.

If you have any concerns about navigating the legal process surrounding this incident, call 866-883-4318 to speak with a lawyer.
