(Cathedral City, CA) A 48-year-old bicyclist was killed late Thursday night, February 12, after entering an intersection against a red light in an Ortega Road collision at Date Palm Drive.
Cathedral City Police Department officers responded around 10:55 p.m. to reports of a crash at Ortega Road and Date Palm Drive. According to police, the bicyclist traveled westbound on Ortega Road and entered the intersection in a crosswalk against a red traffic signal. Authorities said a vehicle traveling southbound on Date Palm Drive also entered the intersection against a red light.
The vehicle struck the bicyclist in the intersection, authorities pronouncing them dead at the scene. Officials did not release the victim’s name or gender. That information remained withheld pending notification of next of kin. Investigators also did not clarify whether impairment, distraction, or other factors may have contributed.
Paramedics transported the driver of the vehicle to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor facial injuries, according to police. Sgt. Ryan Schuelke said the exact cause of the crash remained under investigation as officers continued gathering evidence and reviewing traffic signal data.
Review on the Ortega Road Collision
When a fatal crash occurs at a signalized intersection, investigators review traffic safety laws to understand what factors may have contributed, without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews often focus on traffic signal compliance, right-of-way, and driver attentiveness.
Because police said both parties allegedly entered the intersection against a red signal, investigators may examine the Failure to Obey Traffic Signals Law. This law requires drivers to stop at a steady red light and remain stopped until it is safe to proceed. Signal timing and vehicle approach speeds are often reviewed to understand how the conflict occurred.
Since the victim was riding a bicycle, authorities may also consider the Bicyclist Rights and Duties Law. This law grants bicyclists the same rights and responsibilities as motorists when using public roadways. Investigators may assess how signal compliance applied to both parties.
Officials may further evaluate the Basic Speed Law if speed becomes relevant. This law requires drivers to travel at speeds reasonable for traffic, visibility, and roadway conditions. These combined statutes help guide the department’s review of the Ortega Road collision as evidence continues to be analyzed.
