Mendota, CA (August 7, 2024) An entire community was saddened following news of a bicyclist’s death in Mendota on July 30th. 75-year-old Jimmy Cruz was struck by a semi-truck while riding on Highway 33, not far from Belmont Avenue. The tragic accident occurred just after 11:00 a.m., according to reports.
It was a few minutes after 11:00 a.m. on July 30th as 75-year-old Cruz rode his bicycle along Highway 33 in Mendota. At approximately 11:07 a.m., Cruz’s bicycle was suddenly struck by a semi-truck, reports indicated. The impact sent Cruz flying from his bicycle and landing hard on the roadway. The bicycle was dented and smashed following the accident. The driver of the semi-truck stopped and hopped out to see what had happened. They waited at the scene with the rider until authorities arrived.
The Fresno County Sheriff’s Department, as well as the California Highway Patrol, arrived at the scene and found the bicyclist on the ground. He wasn’t moving and it was obvious to emergency personnel that he had sustained serious injuries in the accident. They hurried to his side, ready to perform life-saving measures, but found the victim already deceased. Sadly, they pronounced Jimmy Cruz dead at the scene and waited for a coroner with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Department to arrive.

Investigators at the scene questioned the truck driver and gathered every piece of evidence they could find. Officers are determined to understand what exactly happened, as well as who was responsible for this deadly accident on Highway 33.
