(San Diego, CA) A 55-year-old bicyclist was seriously injured Wednesday night, November 5, in a Grand Avenue crash after being struck by an SUV in Pacific Beach, authorities said.

According to the San Diego Police Department, the crash happened around 8:00 p.m. at the 1100 block of Grand Avenue, near Everts Street. Investigators said the bicyclist attempted to turn and entered the eastbound No. 1 lane of Grand Avenue. At that moment, a Ford Escape driven by a 23-year-old woman struck him.

Officers found the rider down in the roadway with severe leg injuries. Paramedics transported him to a hospital, where he was treated for an open tibia-fibula fracture and a broken femur. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with police.

The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation by the SDPD Traffic Division. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 619-531-2204 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.

Overview on the Grand Avenue Crash

When a bicycle and vehicle collide, investigators often reference the Bicycle Safety Law. This law gives bicyclists the same rights and responsibilities as drivers. As a result, requiring motorists to share the road and maintain safe distance. Investigators will assess whether the driver or cyclist failed to yield or signal properly.

If visibility or speed played a role, the Basic Speed Law may also apply. It requires drivers to travel at speeds that are reasonable and safe for current conditions. Nighttime driving in busy areas like Pacific Beach often requires extra caution around cyclists and pedestrians.

In addition, the Turning and Right-of-Way Law could be reviewed. It mandates that drivers yield to oncoming traffic when turning and that cyclists ensure intersections are clear before proceeding. These statutes will help the SDPD determine how the Grand Avenue crash occurred and whether any violations contributed.

    Support for the Family

You should remain in contact with the San Diego Police Department’s Traffic Division for updates on the investigation and your loved one’s recovery. Keeping copies of medical records and police reports will be important for follow-up care and insurance purposes.

When you are ready, consider consulting an attorney experienced in bicycle injury cases. They can help you understand your rights and guide you through any potential claims or compensation processes.

Most importantly, focus on recovery and support. Lean on family, friends, and local rehabilitation or counseling services in San Diego as your loved one heals from this serious crash.
