Henderson, NV (June 29, 2024) A blanket of sadness covered the community of Henderson on Friday night following a pedestrian accident. An 82-year-old man was struck and killed by a vehicle while walking near Eastern Avenue. It happened near the intersection of Coronado Center, not far from Horizon Ridge Parkway. Officers reported that the accident occurred just minutes before 10:00 p.m.
A gray Volkswagen sedan was on South Eastern Avenue when his headlights suddenly illuminated something in the road. The driver had no time to react and struck what turned out to be a pedestrian. The 82-year-old man was walking outside of a designated crosswalk in an attempt to cross the street, just before 10:00 p.m. The impact threw the pedestrian several feet before gravity pulled them back down, hard, onto the ground.
The driver pulled over and immediately called the police, reports indicated. Emergency personnel arrived at the scene and found the pedestrian lying in the roadway with life-threatening injuries. Paramedics quickly loaded him into an ambulance and rushed him to a local hospital to receive emergency treatment. The medical staff did everything they could, however, the pedestrian succumbed to their injuries. He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Officers took a statement from the driver of the Volkswagen and gathered any evidence they could find at the scene. At this time, they do not believe speed or impairment played a role in this fatal pedestrian collision. Officers are working to determine what exactly happened in Henderson that night.
