Carmichael, CA (May 22, 2024) An unexpected and avoidable accident took place in Carmichael on Saturday, May 18th, between a motorcyclist and an SUV. The collision claimed the motorcyclist’s life, according to the California Highway Patrol. It all took place on Walnut Avenue, not far from Robertson.
Initial reports indicated that a woman driving an Acura SUV was traveling on Walnut Avenue, heading south, and slowed down to make a left turn onto Robertson. The motorcyclist approached the intersection at a high rate of speed and went right through a red light, offers reported. The motorcycle slammed into the side of the SUV, throwing the motorcyclist. The rider wasn’t wearing a helmet and hit the ground with great force. The motorcycle was completely smashed and finally came to a stop several feet from the rider, who was said to be in his 50s.
Emergency personnel arrived at the scene and found the motorcyclist lying on the ground, motionless. The driver of the SUV had stopped and was waiting for the police. She cooperated during the investigation, officers said. Officers hurried to the motorcyclist’s side and found that he had sustained fatal injuries in the collision. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene and officers called for the Sacramento County Coroner’s Officer to come to the scene.
Officers want to remind motorcyclists of the importance of wearing helmets when operating a motorcycle. The investigation into this accident is ongoing as detectives try to understand why the motorcyclist ran the red light at such a high rate of speed. Crews had to clean debris from the scene and the motorcycle had to be hauled away on a trailer.
