San Jose, CA (May 7, 2024) A cloud of sadness fell over San Jose on Tuesday morning, following the death of a bicyclist. Initial reports stated that a pickup ran a red light and slammed into the bicyclist at the intersection of East Capital Expressway and Senter Road. Tragically, the bicyclist died at the scene.

It was Tuesday morning in San Jose as a man rode a bicycle through the intersection of East Capital Expressway and Senter Road. A red pickup truck was heading west on East Capital Expressway at the same time. The driver of the pickup was speeding and seemed to appear from out of nowhere as it ran a red light and crashed into the bicyclist. The red pickup then collided with another pickup that was heading north on Senter Road.

The San Jose Police Department quickly arrived at the scene and found the bicycle bent and mangled, lying in the roadway. Several feet from the damaged bicycle was the rider, also lying on the ground, motionless. Officers rushed to his side, only to find that he had been killed in the accident. With heavy hearts, they covered him with a tarp and pronounced him dead at the scene.

Officers had to close the intersection from Tuers Boulevard to Seven Trees Boulevard on East Capital Expressway, and from Southside Drive to Singleton Road on Senter Road. Investigators continue to work this case to determine what exactly caused the pickup to run a red light and high the bicyclist in this San Jose intersection. Officers would like to remind drivers that laws are set in place for everyone’s safety and we, as drivers, need to adhere to these laws in an attempt to prevent tragedies such as this one.
