Temecula, CA (May 1, 2024) It was just before 10:00 p.m. in Temecula as 39-year-old Leland Franklin walked along Winchester Road. South of Promenade Mall East, a vehicle approached Franklin and struck him. Sadly, Leland Franklin did not survive this collision that occurred on a dark California night.

Leland Franklin was said to be walking in the roadway of Winchester Road, surrounded by the darkness of night, making him difficult to see, according to the driver that hit him. The vehicle struck Franklin, throwing the pedestrian’s body several feet from the vehicle. Franklin landed hard on the ground with life-threatening injuries. The accident occurred at approximately 9:55 p.m. and the panicked driver immediately stopped and called 911.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department arrived at the scene within 15 minutes, along with paramedics. They rushed to Franklin’s side, ready to give life-saving medical treatment, but he had succumbed to his injuries. Sadness hung in the dark, night air as officers pronounced Leland Franklin dead at the scene and gently covered his body with a tarp before contacting the coroner.

Deputies took a statement from the driver of the vehicle, but he was not taken into custody. They do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in this fatal accident on Winchester Road. This fatal accident serves as a tragic reminder that drivers must always stay alert, especially when driving in the dark. It also serves as a reminder to pedestrians to remain on the shoulder of the road and watch for oncoming traffic.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Southwest Station is leading this investigation. They are diligently working to determine what caused this fatal collision in Temecula and who was actually at fault.
