Apple Valley, CA (April 30, 2024) Sadness spread through the community of Apple Valley following a collision that claimed a motorcyclist’s life. 39-year-old Matthew Hicks, from Apple Valley, succumbed to injuries he received in this collision. The tragedy occurred on Saturday evening, April 20th, just after 6:00 p.m. The motorcycle collided with a minivan at the intersection of Quinnault Road and Highway 18, claiming Hicks’ life and leaving a child with serious injuries, reports indicated.

Hicks was on a 2006 Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle was heading east on Highway 18, in the No. 1 lane. At the same time, a white 2016 Toyota Sienna minivan was on Quinnault Road, heading north. The minivan attempted to make a left turn on Highway 18, but failed to yield to the motorcycle. Hicks had no time to react and ended up slamming into the side of the minivan in the middle of the intersection.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene and found the minivan with all of the airbags deployed. The driver’s side was smashed and dented and officers found six occupants inside. One of the occupants, a child, was seriously injured in the accident. The Apple Valley Fire Protection District firefighters called for a medical helicopter to come to the scene. It quickly transported the injured child to a trauma center that was out of the area.

The motorcycle was ripped, smashed and completely damaged. Debris was thrown in all directions and the motorcyclist laid on the ground, motionless. Good Samaritans were already at the scene giving the motorcyclist CPR, officers said. They were trying diligently to save the motorcyclist’s life. Paramedics, however, determined that there was nothing they could do. Sadly, the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

Highway 18 had to be closed in both directions for an investigation. The Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) gathered evidence and are working hard to understand why this accident took place in Apple Valley. The wreckage that was once a motorcycle was hauled from the scene and crews cleaned the debris from the area, record indicated.
