Palm Desert, CA (March 13, 2024) Deputies were called to the scene of an accident involving a bicyclist on Tuesday evening in Palm Desert. In a sad turn of events, the bicyclist, identified as Jay Groth, 62, from Indio, survived the accident only to succumb to his injuries later at the hospital, authorities said. The awful accident took place at Country Club Drive and Cook Street just after 7:30 p.m.
Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Don Olson said that emergency crews arrived to find Groth down on the ground with major injuries. Paramedics rushed to do everything they could for the unresponsive bicyclist. The bicycle was seriously damaged by the vehicle and laid several feet from Groth. Paramedics rushed Groth to a local hospital where emergency personnel did everything they could, but Groth’s injuries were too severe. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the hospital at approximately 8:37 p.m.
The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with police officers during their investigation. The smashed bicycle was removed from the scene and officers gathered information to help them better determine what took place that evening in Palm Desert.
