Concord, CA (November 30, 2023) 86-year-old Thomas O’Connell of Concord tragically lost his life and his wife of 60 years, Marilyn O’Connell, 82, was injured in a DUI crash in Concord. The Concord Police Department said the accident occurred because of Damien Lopez-Avelino, age 19, also of Concord, who was driving while under the influence.
Officers arrived at the scene of the wreck to find two vehicles, badly damaged. They found the O’Connell’s in their vehicle. Marilyn O’Connell was seriously injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment. Her husband, Thomas O’Connell, however, was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries before help even arrived at the scene.

Damien Lopez-Avelino was arrested and charged with several felonies, including vehicular manslaughter. He is also facing charges of DUI causing serious bodily injury, hit-and-run with injury and leaving the scene of an accident. He was also charged with a misdemeanor for driving a vehicle without a valid drivers license.
His negligence cost one person his life and cost his family a great loss.
