(San Diego, CA) A 59-year-old woman died after a crash on a Pacific Beach intersection and the other driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI.
On Thursday, November 5, at about 6:20 a.m., the collision occurred at Mission Boulevard and Grand Avenue in Pacific Beach. A Ford Fusion was traveling northbound on Mission at high speed while a Toyota Camry was stopped at a red light on westbound Grand, according to the San Diego Police Department.
For unknown reasons, the Ford veered right and struck the driver’s side of the Toyota. The 59-year-old woman had been behind the wheel of the Camry when it was hit.
Following the impact, paramedics transported the woman to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, SDPD Officer David O’Brien said. Authorities withheld her identity pending notification of her family.
Police took the Ford’s 41-year-old driver into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence. Their name was not immediately available. The SDPD Traffic Division is currently investigating the collision.
Understanding the Mission Boulevard Collision
Police described a high-speed approach followed by an impact with a car stopped at a traffic signal. The reported driving and the suspected impairment raise separate issues under California law.
California Vehicle Code 22350 prohibits driving faster than is reasonable or prudent for traffic, visibility and roadway conditions, or at a speed that endangers people or property. The reported presence of a stopped vehicle makes the Ford’s approach to the intersection central to that safety requirement. Police described the Ford’s speed as high without providing a measured speed.
The arrest concerns California Vehicle Code 23152, which prohibits driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs or a combination of both. Police reported suspected DUI, rather than a conviction or a confirmed substance. Evidence of impairment would address the driver’s ability to operate the Ford safely.
The speed requirement applies independently of whether impairment is established. Reviewing the Ford’s approach and the suspected DUI therefore involves distinct conduct, even though both concern the same fatal encounter.
Advice for the Family
You can ask the assigned SDPD investigator whether the arrest has resulted in a referral to prosecutors and how your family can receive notice of any resulting court proceedings. That can help you distinguish updates about the collision investigation from developments in a criminal case arising from the Mission Boulevard collision.
