(South Los Angeles, California) Around 8:47 p.m., a man was struck and killed by a hit-and-run vehicle on Wednesday, near the intersection of 69th street and Central Avenue of South Los Angeles.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the driver headed southbound on central avenue. At some point, they struck the victim, fleeing the scene.

The Los Angeles Fire Department Personnel arrived at the scene and pronounced the pedestrian dead. Investigation and two police units remained at the scene until 1 a.m.  on Thursday.

No description of the driver or vehicle was made available.

Legal Analysis of the South Los Angeles Hit-and-Run Accident

When hit-and-run collisions occur, investigators may review hit-and-run law codes and fines that hit-and-run drivers may face. Such as fines of $1,000 or even imprisonment in a county jail.

The driver violated California Vehicle Code 20001 to which it states that if a driver is involved in a vehicle accident resulting in an injury or fatal death, a person shall stop their vehicle and fulfill the requirements of California Vehicle Code 20003 and 20004. This can help investigators determine what law codes the driver involved in the hit-and-run accident shall be punished with.

Under California Vehicle Code 20003 if the driver is involved in an accident resulting in death or injury, they are required to give out their personal information to traffic or police officers such as their address and vehicle registration.

Because California Vehicle Code 20001 was violated by the driver, he or she may be imprisoned in a state prison, or in a county jail for no more than a year. The driver may be fined $1,000 to $10,000 or by both imprisonment and fined.

    Advice to the Family
