(Highway 101, Oregon) On Saturday, September 19th, a Portland man dies after getting struck by three vehicles on Highway 101, just near Gleneden Beach in Lincoln County.
According to investigators, the pedestrian was walking close or on the travel lane and was struck by a gray Chevrolet, driven by 61-year-old Renee Ronilyn Wohlwend, a white Mercedes Sprinter van driven by 34-years-old, Gregory Lear Miller and a blue Toyota Sequoia driven by 50 years-old, Michael Aaron Hadden. Troopers did receive reports on the crash in regard to a man walking on the roadway.
Perkin was pronounced dead at the scene and Gregory Lear Miller was detained and arrested for fleeing the scene.

Based on the information given, it’s possible that the pedestrian violated ORS 814.040 as it prohibits pedestrians from leaving a curb or safety area to the path of a vehicle close enough where it can cause immediate hazard, and failure to yield the right-of-way to a vehicle while crossing a roadway with a marked or unmarked cross walk of an intersection. Failure in following these rules is a Class D traffic violation.
If the pedestrian was a highway worker, it’s possible that the driver was arrested in this case under ORS 811.233 to which it requires drivers to yield the right-of-way to highway workers and if this requirement gets violated, the driver committed a class B traffic violation.
