(Los Angeles, California) 30 Year-old woman killed when a vehicle struck a fire hydrant after entering a sidewalk at Eighth Street and Ardmore Avenue.

According to a spokesperson from the Los Angeles Police Department, the incident happened in the middle of the night, around 12:15 a.m. Another woman was involved in the collision and was sent to California Hospital Medical Center for unknown injuries.

Details on the amount of people injured and vehicles involved were not released immediately. LAPD personnel were investigating the scene by 1:45 a.m.

Perspective on Eighth Street and Ardmore Avenue:

Because the driver did not yield the right-of-way to the pedestrians, investigators will most likely review California Code, VEH 21950 (a). This law states that drivers must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians in marked or unmarked crosswalks in an intersection. Although the pedestrians were not in a marked/unmarked crosswalk, they were still on a sidewalk that they have legal rights to walk in. This code can help determine who would be at fault, which in this case it may be the driver’s.

Investigators may also review © of this section. This law states that drivers must exercise care when pedestrians are at an unmarked or marked cross-walk and reduce their speed or take any action in regards to their vehicle to safeguard the safety of the pedestrian. This shows that in this case, the driver should have already exercised safety before hitting the two pedestrians.

California Code, VEH 21663 may also be what investigators may be looking at. This code specifically says Except as expressly permitted pursuant to this code, including Sections 21100.4 and 21114.5, no person shall operate or move a motor vehicle upon a sidewalk except as may be necessary to enter or leave adjacent property. This is an important factor that investigators may take a look at because the driver that struck the 30 year old pedestrian did not seem to be leaving a driveway that resulted in driving on a side-walk. The story was primarily about the driver striking two pedestrians on a side-walk and a fire hydrant.
