(Los Angeles, CA) A 37-year-old man was killed in a 36th Street crash after being struck by a hit-and-run driver while riding a bicycle in the Jefferson Park area.

The collision occurred around 10:50 p.m. Saturday, May 2, near the intersection of 36th Street and Fifth Avenue. Investigators said the bicyclist, identified as Melvin Salgado by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office, was hit by a speeding dark-colored Jeep Wrangler. The driver fled the scene immediately after the crash.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded and pronounced Salgado dead at the scene. Officials have not released additional details about the events leading up to the collision. The suspect vehicle has not yet been located.

Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the driver. A reward of up to $50,000 is being offered for information leading to the suspect’s identification and conviction. The investigation remains ongoing.

Analysis of the 36th Street Crash

When a fatal bicycle collision involves a driver leaving the scene, investigators review traffic laws carefully to understand contributing factors without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews often focus on roadway sharing, driver behavior, and post-collision responsibilities.

Because the driver fled, officers will likely examine the Hit-and-Run Law. This law requires drivers involved in injury or fatal crashes to stop, provide identification, and render aid. Leaving the scene can delay emergency care and complicate the investigation. Authorities will work to identify the suspect through witness statements and available evidence.

If roadway sharing is a factor, police may also review the Bicycle Rights and Duties Law. This law requires bicyclists to follow the same rules as motor vehicles while granting them equal rights on the roadway. Investigators will assess the cyclist’s position and visibility at the time of the crash.

When speed or driver awareness is considered, officers may examine the Basic Speed Law. This law requires drivers to travel at speeds that are safe for roadway and traffic conditions. Excessive speed can reduce reaction time and increase crash severity. These factors are often central to understanding a 36th Street crash.
