(San Diego, CA) Two people were injured in a Pacific Highway collision early Monday morning, April 6, after a chain-reaction crash near the Midway district.

San Diego Police Department officers responded shortly before 1:30 a.m. near Pacific Highway and West Washington Street. Investigators said a driver lost control of a 2006 Chrysler Town & Country, causing the minivan to spin out and stop in the roadway. The incident unfolded near San Diego International Airport.

A 58-year-old passenger exited the minivan and walked into a traffic lane moments after the vehicle came to a stop. An oncoming Volkswagen Jetta then struck her. Emergency responders arrived and transported the woman to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla with a compound leg fracture and other injuries.

The driver of the Volkswagen, a woman in her 20s, was also taken to a hospital for evaluation of reported pain. Authorities said the driver of the minivan was not injured. Officials have not said what caused the initial loss of control, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Analysis On The Pacific Highway Collision

When a chain-reaction crash involves a stopped vehicle and a pedestrian entering the roadway, investigators review traffic laws to understand contributing factors. These reviews focus on driver control, pedestrian safety, and roadway awareness without assigning fault prematurely.

Because the incident began with a driver losing control, officers may examine the Basic Speed Law. This law requires drivers to operate vehicles at speeds that are safe for roadway and traffic conditions. Early morning hours can present reduced visibility and changing traffic patterns. Investigators will consider whether speed or road conditions contributed to the loss of control.

If a passenger exits a vehicle into an active traffic lane, authorities may review the Pedestrian Outside Crosswalk Law. This law requires pedestrians outside crosswalks to yield to vehicles. Entering a traffic lane unexpectedly can increase the risk of secondary collisions. Investigators may evaluate how visibility and timing affected the situation.

When multiple vehicles are involved in sequence, officers may also consider the Following Distance Law. This law requires drivers to maintain enough space to stop safely. In chain-reaction scenarios, proper spacing can help prevent additional impacts. These factors may help explain what led to the Pacific Highway collision.

    What the Family Can Do

If you or a loved one were involved in this crash, staying in contact with San Diego Police can help you receive updates. You can request official reports when they become available to better understand the findings.

You may also consider speaking with a qualified attorney who can explain your options. In addition, support from family, friends, and medical professionals can be important during recovery.
