(Fullerton, CA) A man critically injured in a Gilbert Street hit-and-run earlier this month has died from his injuries, the Fullerton Police Department announced.

Officers responded just after 10:23 p.m. on Dec. 20 to South Gilbert Street and Carol Drive. Upon arriving, they found the pedestrian badly hurt after being struck by a vehicle whose driver fled without stopping. Paramedics transported the victim to a trauma center in critical condition and remained hospitalized until he died on Christmas morning.

Police say the suspect vehicle is believed to be a white, four-door sedan with front-end damage. The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue searching for the driver.

Overview on the Gilbert Street Hit-and-Run

When a driver leaves the scene of a collision involving injury or death, investigators immediately apply the Hit-and-Run Statute. This law requires drivers to stop, provide assistance, and identify themselves. Because the motorist fled after striking the pedestrian, this statute sits at the center of the Gilbert Street hit-and-run investigation.

Because the victim was walking along or across the roadway at night, officers may also examine the Pedestrian Roadway Safety Law. This law requires pedestrians outside a crosswalk to yield to vehicles, but it also emphasizes that drivers must exercise due care to avoid collisions. Its application helps investigators understand visibility, lighting, and driver awareness in the moments before impact.

Additionally, detectives often consider the Basic Speed Law. Even if speed does not appear to be the primary cause, this rule requires motorists to travel at speeds reasonable for nighttime conditions. Evaluating safe speed assists investigators in reconstructing how quickly events unfolded in the Gilbert Street hit-and-run.

    Support for the Family

If your loved one was the victim, you may want to request the Fullerton Police Department’s collision report when it is available. It will offer clarity on the investigation and help guide next steps.

Speaking with a wrongful death attorney may also be helpful. They can explain available options for funeral expenses, loss of support, and navigating insurance matters.

Lean on community resources, friends, and family during this painful time. Compassionate support will make a meaningful difference as you process this loss.
