(Commerce, CA) A Santa Ana Freeway crash resulted in the death of Jose Cordova Aldana, 52, Wednesday afternoon, October 22, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The fatal collision occurred around 12:55 p.m. on the southbound Santa Ana (5) Freeway near Washington Boulevard.  When authorities arrived, they found multiple vehicles involved, one being overturned. The details have not been confirmed by CHP investigators.

After assessing the accident, Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics pronounced Aldana dead at the scene. The crash prompted a full closure of the southbound lanes. After a couple hours, three of the five lanes reopened later in the afternoon. Authorities lifted the SigAlert at 4:50 p.m. once investigators cleared the wreckage and reopened all lanes.

Perspective on the Santa Ana Freeway Crash

This highlights the serious risks of multi-vehicle collisions on major commuter corridors like the 5 Freeway. Investigators will examine the sequence of impacts and whether driver error, unsafe lane changes, or speed contributed to the deadly wreck.

If excessive speed or following too closely played a role, the Basic Speed Law may apply. It requires motorists to drive at a speed that is reasonable and prudent for current traffic and weather conditions. Failing to adjust for congestion or sudden slowdowns can lead to catastrophic chain-reaction crashes.

Additionally, California Vehicle Code 21703 can come into play. This prohibits tailgating or following another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent. In multi-vehicle freeway crashes, this law is often reviewed to determine whether drivers had enough time and distance to safely stop.

The CHP will continue investigating the cause of the Santa Ana Freeway crash and the death of Jose Cordova Aldana, with findings expected to clarify how the incident unfolded and what measures might prevent similar tragedies.

    Guidance for Aldana’s Family

For the family of Jose Cordova Aldana, this sudden loss is unimaginable. You can contact the California Highway Patrol’s East Los Angeles Area Office to request updates and obtain a copy of the official accident report once the investigation concludes.

The Los Angeles County Victim Assistance Program offers grief counseling, emotional support, and help with funeral expenses. Families may also consult a wrongful death attorney to explore available legal options and ensure accountability following the Santa Ana Freeway crash.

If you have any concerns about navigating the legal process surrounding this incident, call 866-883-4318 to speak with a lawyer.
