(Sacramento, CA) A woman who was struck by a vehicle in a 29th Street accident earlier this month has been identified as Alicia Barnes, 65, of Roseville, according to the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.

The Sacramento Police Department said officers responded around 6:30 p.m. on October 2. They received reports of a collision involving a pedestrian near 29th Street and K Street. They found Barnes lying on the roadway, transporting him to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. After arriving at the hospital, doctors pronounced Barnes dead.

Police said the driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. At this time, officers do not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine what caused the fatal collision.

Overview on the 29th Street Accident

Fatal pedestrian crashes often prompt investigators to examine multiple aspects of roadway safety and driver behavior. In this case, officials will look closely at visibility, driver speed, and pedestrian right-of-way to determine what led to the tragedy.

Because the collision involved a pedestrian, Authorities will apply California Vehicle Code 21950. It requires drivers to yield to pedestrians crossing the street and to exercise due care at all times. The law also reminds pedestrians to act safely and avoid stepping into a vehicle’s path when it’s too close to stop. Investigators will review whether both Alicia Barnes and the driver followed these provisions along 29th Street.

If roadway conditions or driver speed contributed to the collision, the Basic Speed Law may also come into play. This law prohibits driving faster than is safe for existing conditions such as lighting, visibility, and traffic flow. Even when obeying posted speed limits, drivers must adjust for changing conditions. Authorities will consider this since the incident took place in downtown Sacramento, where foot traffic is common.

Authorities will continue to apply these laws and witness accounts to determine how the 29th Street accident occurred and whether preventive safety measures could reduce future risks for pedestrians.

    Guidance for Barnes’ Family

It may also help to reach out to a wrongful death attorney to understand your family’s rights and next steps. Local victim assistance programs in Sacramento County can offer counseling, financial guidance, and emotional support during this difficult time.
