(Los Angeles, CA) A 44-year-old man was severely injured in a Woodley Avenue hit-and-run early last month, and police are now asking for the public’s help to identify the driver responsible.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the crash occurred around 5:45 a.m. on Dec. 7 in the Panorama City area. Investigators said the pedestrian walked along the roadway on Woodley Avenue near Sherman Way. At some point, a gray sedan struck traveling northbound struck the victim. The driver did not stop after the collision and fled the scene.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics transported the man to a hospital, where he was treated for injuries described by officials as severe. Police did not release the victim’s name.

On Jan. 5, LAPD released video of the suspected vehicle in hopes that someone will recognize the car or come forward with information about the driver. Detectives said the footage shows a gray sedan consistent with the one involved in the collision. Police urge anyone with information to contact the LAPD’s Valley Traffic Division and ask to speak with Detective Ramirez.

Overview on the Woodley Avenue Hit-and-Run

When a pedestrian is seriously injured and a driver leaves the scene, investigators carefully review traffic laws. These reviews help determine what violations may have occurred, without assuming conclusions before all evidence is gathered.

Because the driver fled after striking a pedestrian, authorities will closely examine the Hit-and-Run Law. This law requires any driver involved in a crash causing injury to stop, provide identifying information, and render reasonable aid. Leaving the scene can significantly delay medical care and often worsens outcomes for victims.

Since the victim was on foot at the time of the crash, investigators may also consider the Pedestrian Right-of-Way Law. This law requires drivers to exercise due care to avoid colliding with pedestrians, even when a person is crossing outside of a marked crosswalk. Early morning lighting conditions can make this duty especially important.

Finally, if speed or inattention is suspected, the Basic Speed Law  may be reviewed. This law requires motorists to drive at speeds that are reasonable for visibility, traffic, and road conditions. These statutes together help investigators understand what may have led to the Woodley Avenue hit-and-run as the case develops.
