(East Los Angeles, CA) A pedestrian was struck and killed Sunday night, December 7, in a Williamson Avenue accident near Whittier Boulevard.

The crash occurred around 7:30 p.m., and responding officers found the victim in the roadway with severe injuries. Paramedics attempted lifesaving measures, but they pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene. Their identity has not yet been released pending notification of relatives.

CHP investigators said they do not believe the incident was a hit-and-run. On Monday, authorities confirmed they arrested the driver on suspicion of DUI following the collision. They spotted a silver SUV stopped in the road as officers examined the intersection. Officers closed the intersection for several hours during the investigation.

Analysis on the Williamson Avenue Accident

When a pedestrian is struck in an active traffic lane, investigators often review the Right-of-Way for Pedestrians Law. This statute outlines the responsibilities of both drivers and pedestrians at intersections and crosswalks. It requires motorists to exercise due care and slow down when a pedestrian is present. In this case, officers will look at lighting, visibility, and the pedestrian’s location at the time of impact.

Because the driver was arrested on suspicion of impairment, authorities will also apply the DUI Prohibition Law. Driving under the influence can significantly reduce reaction time and impair judgment, making nighttime pedestrian collisions more likely. This law becomes central as investigators determine how impairment may have contributed to the Williamson Avenue accident.

Analysts may also consider the Basic Speed Law, which requires drivers to travel at speeds that are reasonable and safe for conditions. Even moderate speeding at night can limit a driver’s ability to see and respond to pedestrians. Reviewing this statute helps clarify whether speed played a role.

    Support for the Family

If your loved one was the victim in this collision, you should request the full CHP collision report once it becomes available. This document can help answer difficult questions and assist with insurance or legal steps.

You may also want to consult a wrongful death attorney who can guide you through possible claims for funeral expenses, loss of support, and other damages.

Finally, consider leaning on community grief resources, counseling services, or support groups in Los Angeles County. Sudden loss is overwhelming, and caring support can help your family navigate the difficult days ahead.
