(Palm Springs, CA) A man was killed early Sunday morning, January 18, in a Vista Chino collision after a hit-and-run crash.

The Palm Springs Police Department said the crash occurred around 3:30 a.m. near 1011 East Vista Chino. Officers responding to the scene found a man lying in the eastbound lane of traffic. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Authorities identified the victim as Ricardo Marano, 56, of Palm Springs. Authorities continue to investigate several circumstances surrounding the crash.

Investigators said the driver involved did not remain at the scene. In the days following the crash, detectives learned a black 2005 Chevrolet Silverado could be connected to the collision. On Tuesday, officers served a search warrant at a location in Thousand Palms and seized the vehicle.

Police said no arrests had been made as of Tuesday afternoon. Authorities did not say whether the vehicle showed visible damage or whether forensic testing was underwayhttps://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codes_displaySection.xhtml?sectionNum=20001.&lawCode=VEH. Investigators emphasized that the case remains active as evidence continues to be reviewed.

Review on the Vista Chino Collision

When a fatal hit-and-run occurs in the early morning hours, investigators review traffic safety laws to understand what factors may have contributed, without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews focus on driver responsibility, pedestrian safety, and post-collision conduct.

Because the driver allegedly left the scene, investigators will closely examine the Hit-and-Run Law. This law requires a driver involved in a collision causing injury or death to stop, provide identifying information, and render reasonable assistance. Fleeing the scene can delay emergency care and often leads to more serious criminal exposure once identified.

Since the victim was found in an active traffic lane, authorities may also review the Duty of Care to Pedestrians Law. This law requires drivers to exercise due care to avoid colliding with pedestrians, even outside of marked crosswalks. Roads like Vista Chino can be especially dangerous at night due to speed, limited lighting, and wider travel lanes.

Investigators may additionally consider the Basic Speed Law if evidence suggests speed played a role. This law requires motorists to drive at speeds reasonable for traffic, visibility, and roadway conditions. Reduced visibility during overnight hours can significantly shorten a driver’s reaction window. Together, these statutes help guide the investigation into what may have led to the Vista Chino collision as detectives continue their work.
