(Panorama City, CA) A 19-year-old pedestrian was critically injured Tuesday night, December 9, in a Van Nuys Boulevard crash after being struck in a marked crosswalk, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The collision occurred around 7:55 p.m. at Van Nuys Boulevard and Tupper Street. Police say the young man crossed inside the crosswalk when a white Toyota sedan struck him. The driver left and continued northbound without stopping. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics transported him to a hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
LAPD’s Valley Traffic Division works to investigate the hit-and-run asks the public for information that may help identify the driver. Officers noted that no suspect or vehicle license plate details have yet been confirmed.
Overview on the Van Nuys Boulevard Crash
When a pedestrian is struck while lawfully using a crosswalk, investigators often reference the Right-of-Way for Pedestrians Law. This law requires motorists to yield to pedestrians in marked crosswalks and exercise due care. In this case, officers will examine lighting, traffic speed, and whether the driver had sufficient opportunity to stop before the impact.
Because the driver fled immediately after the collision, authorities will also apply the Hit-and-Run Statute. This statute makes it illegal for a driver involved in an injury or fatal crash to leave the scene. Hit-and-run behavior significantly heightens the seriousness of the investigation and the potential criminal penalties.
Investigators may additionally consider the Basic Speed Law, which requires drivers to maintain speeds that are reasonable and safe for nighttime conditions. Even on well-lit boulevards, reduced visibility can make it harder to detect pedestrians, underscoring why speed is often examined in a Van Nuys Boulevard crash.
