(Los Angeles, CA) A pedestrian was killed late Monday night, October 20, in a southbound 110 Freeway crash near downtown Los Angeles after apparently falling or jumping from a vehicle before being struck by multiple cars, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The incident occurred around 11:21 p.m. near West 23rd Street on the southbound lanes of the Harbor Freeway. CHP Officer Sergio Garcia said the victim had been traveling in a car before ending up on the roadway, where several passing vehicles struck the individual.

When paramedics arrived, they pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene. Their name, age, and gender have not yet been released pending family notification. CHP officers closed all southbound lanes for roughly two hours while investigators examined the scene and collected evidence.

Overview on the Southbound 110 Freeway Crash

Pedestrian incidents on freeways are uncommon but almost always fatal due to high speeds and low visibility. This collision has prompted CHP investigators to review what led the individual to exit a moving vehicle and how traffic conditions contributed to the tragedy.

In these cases, California Vehicle Code 21954 is relevant. It requires pedestrians outside of designated crossings to yield the right-of-way to vehicles. Motorists must also exercise due care to avoid hitting anyone on the roadway. CHP will analyze vehicle speeds, lighting conditions, and traffic flow to determine whether any drivers might face liability.

If impairment or distraction is suspected, California Vehicle Code 23152 may also be reviewed. this prohibits driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Any level of impairment can reduce reaction time and make it harder for drivers to avoid unexpected hazards on freeways.

The investigation into the southbound 110 Freeway crash remains ongoing. Officials work to identify the victim and piece together the sequence of events that led to the fatal incident.

    Guidance for the Family

Losing someone in such a sudden and devastating manner is incredibly difficult. Families of victims can contact the California Highway Patrol Central Los Angeles Area Office for updates and request the official collision report.

The Los Angeles County Victim Assistance Program offers counseling and support for families coping with fatal roadway incidents. Speaking with a wrongful death attorney may also help you understand your legal rights and explore possible options for seeking justice and closure.
