(Los Angeles, CA) A 65-year-old man was killed Sunday evening, January 4, in a San Pedro Street crash in the Florence neighborhood of Los Angeles.

The collision occurred around 5:49 p.m. at the intersection of San Pedro Street and 83rd Street. Police say the man walked westbound in a crosswalk when a northbound vehicle struck him. Authorities pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene. The driver remained at the location and cooperated with investigators. Police have not released the victim’s identity pending notification of next of kin.

Opinion on the San Pedro Street Crash

When a pedestrian is struck inside a crosswalk, investigators often look to California’s Pedestrian Right-of-Way Law. This statute requires drivers to yield to pedestrians who cross the street within marked or unmarked crosswalks. At the same time, it requires pedestrians to act with due care for their own safety. Determining the movement and visibility of both parties helps clarify whether a right-of-way violation occurred.

Because this fatality occurred during evening hours, limited visibility may also be considered. Under California’s Basic Speed Law, motorists must travel at speeds that are safe and reasonable for conditions, such as darkness, pedestrian activity, and roadway layout. Even moderate speeds can significantly reduce a driver’s reaction time when a pedestrian is crossing.

    Support for Victim’s Family

Family members awaiting updates may contact the Los Angeles Police Department’s South Traffic Division for additional information as it becomes available. The collision report will help clarify contributing factors and investigative findings.

For those affected by this loss, speaking with a wrongful death attorney may help families understand their rights. This includes potential claims related to funeral expenses, emotional suffering, and other damages.

Local grief support services in South Los Angeles are available to assist loved ones coping with the tragedy of the San Pedro Street crash.
