Los Angeles, CA (January 16, 2024) 43-year-old Maria Munoz was killed and a male pedestrian was critically injured in a hit-and-run in south Los Angeles. Authorities reported that the accident occurred in the Vermont Vista area, around 94th Street, at approximately 11:35 p.m. on Sunday, January 14th.
Initial investigation revealed that the pedestrians were walking in a designated crosswalk on west 94th Street at the intersection of Vermont Avenue. As they crossed, a silver 2023 Kia Sorento, heading north on Vermont Avenue, sped through the intersection. The SUV hit both pedestrians, then continued driving, leaving the two victims behind.

Emergency personnel arrived at the scene and found the two pedestrians lying on the ground. Paramedics rushed to help them, but unfortunately, they found Munoz already deceased. They pronounced her dead at the scene, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The male pedestrian was found with serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital to receive treatment. He was hospitalized due to critical injuries, authorities said.
Officers later found the Kia Sorento abandoned at Vermont Avenue and 90th Street. According to the LAPD, the vehicle sustained a shattered windshield and front-end damage during the collision. The driver was no where to be found, but officers are determined to find him and bring the driver to justice in this fatal hit-and-run collision.
