(Anaheim, CA) Eight Anaheim High School track athletes were injured Tuesday afternoon, December 9, in a North Harbor Boulevard collision after a driver suspected of DUI swerved onto a sidewalk, authorities said.

The crash happened around 2:55 p.m. at the intersection of North Harbor Boulevard and North Street. Police say the students were waiting on the southwest corner for the light to change. Meanwhile, a 27-year-old driver veered off the roadway and struck them. Paramedics transported all eight to a hospital with varying injuries. Officials said they are expected to survive.

First responders also transported the driver to a hospital and later arrested on suspicion of DUI. According to Anaheim police Sgt. Matt Sutter, the driver, showed objective signs of intoxication. The team’s coach, who ran behind the students, witnessed the impact. The investigation remains ongoing.

Opinion on the North Harbor Boulevard Collision

When a vehicle leaves the roadway and enters a sidewalk, investigators often look to the Pedestrian Right-of-Way Law. This law requires motorists to exercise caution and prioritize pedestrian safety, especially near intersections. In this case, officers will examine why the driver lost control and whether reasonable care was used before swerving toward the students.

Because intoxication is suspected, analysts apply the DUI Prohibition Law. This statute makes it illegal to operate a vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs. Impairment can significantly reduce reaction time and control, making it a central factor as authorities determine what led to the North Harbor Boulevard collision.

Investigators may also consider the Basic Speed Law, which requires drivers to travel at speeds safe for conditions. Even if the posted limit was followed, driving too fast for approaching intersections or pedestrian areas increases the risk of losing control. Reviewing this law helps clarify whether speed contributed to the incident.

    Advice for the Families

If your child was among the injured athletes, you should request the official collision report from Anaheim Police once it becomes available. It will provide important details that can assist with medical follow-up and insurance claims.

You may also consider consulting a personal injury attorney experienced in DUI-related pedestrian crashes. They can guide you through options for covering medical costs, therapy, or long-term recovery needs.

Most importantly, focus on healing and support. Lean on school resources, counseling services, and community networks as your family navigates the aftermath of this frightening crash.
