(Panorama City, CA) A 30-year-old skateboarder suffered severe injuries Thursday evening, January 22, after being struck by a vehicle that fled the scene in a Nordhoff Street accident.

The Los Angeles Police Department said the collision occurred around 5:15 p.m. near Nordhoff Street and Lurline Avenue. Officers said a gray four-door Ford Fusion was traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck the skateboarder, causing him to fall and hit the roadway near the curb.

Police said the driver failed to stop after the collision and continued westbound on Nordhoff Street. Investigators later learned the vehicle made a U-turn and headed eastbound, leaving the injured man behind. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics arrived shortly afterward and transported the victim to a hospital in critical condition. Authorities did not release details about the extent of his injuries.

Detectives described the suspect vehicle as a gray Ford Fusion with a light gray repaint on the front right fender. Officers also noted white tape around the edges of both rear headlamps and possibly tinted rear windows. LAPD released video of the collision as part of its effort to identify the driver.

Police emphasized that drivers involved in collisions must stop and provide assistance. Investigators announced a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the suspect.

Overview on the Nordhoff Street Accident

When a hit-and-run collision causes severe injuries, investigators review traffic safety laws to understand what factors may have contributed, without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews focus on driver conduct, speed, and responsibilities after a crash.

Because the driver allegedly fled the scene, investigators will closely examine the Hit-and-Run Law. This law requires a driver involved in a collision causing injury to stop, identify themselves, and render reasonable assistance. Leaving the scene can delay medical care and often leads to more serious criminal exposure once the driver is located.

Since police reported the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed, authorities may also review the Basic Speed Law. This law requires drivers to travel at speeds reasonable for traffic, visibility, and roadway conditions. On surface streets like Nordhoff Street, excessive speed can sharply reduce reaction time and increase the severity of injuries.

Investigators may additionally consider the Reckless Driving Law if evidence shows the vehicle was operated with a willful disregard for safety. High-speed travel in areas with pedestrians, cyclists, or skateboarders can significantly increase the risk of catastrophic outcomes. These statutes help guide the investigation into what may have led to the Nordhoff Street accident as detectives continue reviewing evidence.
