(Long Beach, CA) A 28-year-old man was killed early Sunday, December 7, in a Newport Avenue collision that police say was intentionally caused following a verbal dispute.
Officers responded around 1:47 a.m. to the 1700 block of Newport Avenue, where they found an unconscious man lying in the roadway. Officers began medical aid until Long Beach Fire personnel arrived. Despite performing life-saving measures, the victim died at the scene.
The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner later identified him as Samuel Ocegueda of Long Beach. Homicide detectives dispatched when the preliminary investigation revealed that the victim and the driver had argued shortly before the crash.
According to LBPD, Ocegueda walked across Newport Avenue outside the crosswalk. At that moment, the driver of a dark sedan accelerated toward him, struck him, and fled southbound.
Detectives identified the suspected driver as 28-year-old Isai Solis of Lynwood. He was arrested later that day and booked on suspicion of murder, with bail set at $2 million.
Overview on the Newport Avenue Collision
In incidents where a pedestrian is struck while crossing, investigators often reference the Right-of-Way for Pedestrians Law. This law requires motorists to use due care and slow down when someone is in the roadway. Although the pedestrian was outside the crosswalk, drivers must still take reasonable steps to avoid a collision. This helps frame how the situation escalated before the deliberate act took place.
When intentional acceleration toward a person is alleged, analysts may also consider the Reckless Driving Law. This statute addresses operating a vehicle with willful or wanton disregard for the safety of others. While this case involves criminal allegations far beyond typical recklessness, the principles underscore how dangerous and unlawful such behavior is on public streets.
If impairment is considered during the investigation, officers may apply the DUI Prohibition Law. Even though police have not stated DUI as a factor, this statute remains relevant in serious collisions where driver behavior is under close scrutiny. Reviewing the possibility helps investigators fully understand the circumstances surrounding the Newport Avenue collision.
