(Santa Rosa, CA) A man in his 70s was critically injured in a Morgan Street hit-and-run on Wednesday evening after being struck by a pickup truck while crossing in a Santa Rosa crosswalk.

Santa Rosa officers responded around 7:13 p.m. to Morgan Street and College Avenue. When they arrived, they found the pedestrian unresponsive in the roadway. First responders rushed him to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. Investigators say the man crossed College Avenue in the eastern crosswalk when a blue 2019 Toyota Tacoma, traveling about 35 mph, struck him.

The driver fled but left behind the truck’s bumper and front license plate at the scene. Twenty-four minutes later, authorities identified the suspect as Brigido Peña Villanueva, 31, of Greenfield.  Reports indicated that his windshield wipers had failed in the rain at the time of the collision. Officers arrested and booked him on felony hit-and-run causing serious bodily injury. Police said impairment does not appear to be a factor.

Overview on the Morgan Street Hit-and-Run

Investigators reviewing a crash of this type typically turn to the Right-of-Way in Crosswalks Law, which requires drivers to yield to pedestrians lawfully crossing the street, whether in marked or unmarked crosswalks. Evaluating the pedestrian’s position, traffic controls, and visibility helps determine whether a right-of-way violation occurred.

Because the driver fled the scene, the Hit-and-Run Statute is central to the investigation. This statute mandates that any driver involved in an injury or fatal crash must stop, render aid, and provide identifying information. Failing to do so elevates the incident to a felony, as seen in this case.

Weather conditions such as rain and reduced visibility may also prompt investigators to consider the Basic Speed Law. Even at posted speeds, drivers must operate their vehicles at safe and reasonable speeds for conditions. A claim of malfunctioning wipers may be examined to determine whether the driver was exercising due caution.

Support for the Community and Loved Ones

Those seeking updates may contact the Santa Rosa Police Department once additional findings are released. The official collision report can clarify contributing factors and assist the victim’s family as they navigate next steps.

Families affected by severe injury may also consider consulting a personal injury or wrongful death attorney to understand potential rights to compensation for medical treatment, long-term care, and emotional hardship.

Local support organizations in Sonoma County offer counseling and crisis services to help families cope during traumatic events like the Morgan Street collision.
