(Santa Maria, CA) On Thursday, October 3, at about 7:04 a.m., the Miller Street accident near Dena Way left a mother and her six-year-old daughter with major injuries as officials worked to secure the scene and determine what led to the collision.

According to the Santa Maria Police Department, the mother and daughter were crossing Miller Street in an unmarked crosswalk. All of a sudden, a vehicle struck them. Responding officers and emergency crews found the parent and her child with serious injuries and transported them to a nearby hospital. Doctors listed her being in stable condition, while her mother’s condition remains unknown.

Police said the driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Drugs and alcohol are not believed to have been factors in the crash, which remains under active investigation by the department’s Traffic Bureau.

Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Officer Robles at 805-928-3781, ext. 2315.

Overview of the Miller Street Accident

Pedestrian collisions involving children require thorough investigation to determine whether visibility, crosswalk markings, or driver attention contributed to the incident. The Santa Maria Police Department is reviewing roadway evidence and witness statements as part of its ongoing work. Several laws apply to this incident.

Under Vehicle Code 21954, pedestrians crossing outside a marked crosswalk must yield to oncoming traffic. Regardless, the law requires drivers to use due care. The Basic Speed Law mandates that motorists adjust their speed to avoid collisions, especially in residential areas. In addition, Vehicle Code 20001 requires drivers involved in injury crashes to stop and render aid until police arrive.

These legal provisions frame how authorities will analyze the Miller Street accident to determine compliance with pedestrian safety laws and roadway standards.

    Guidance for the Family

If you are relatives of the mother and daughter, you can stay in contact with the Santa Maria Police Department’s Traffic Bureau for updates and access to the official collision report once it is complete. Keeping medical records and communication logs can help ensure information is accurately shared among care providers. Reaching out to community resources or counseling services may also provide emotional support as recovery continues.

If you have any concerns about navigating the legal process surrounding this incident, call 866-883-4318 to speak with a lawyer.
