(Bakersfield, CA) A woman identified as Melani Joann Seeger, 38, of Bakersfield was killed Sunday night, October 26, in an Airport Drive collision after being struck by a hit-and-run driver in Oildale, authorities said.

According to the California Highway Patrol, officers responded around 8:46 p.m. to Airport Drive, south of Roberts Lane. Initial reports indicated a vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash. When officers arrived, they found that the driver had fled the scene.

Preliminary findings show that Seeger had been walking north along the east curb edge of Airport Drive. At that moment, an unknown northbound vehicle struck her for reasons still under investigation. The impact propelled her in a northeasterly direction, and the driver immediately left the area.

Shortly after paramedics arrived, they pronounced Seeger dead at the scene, according to the Kern County Coroner’s Office. CHP investigators have not yet determined whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision. Anyone with information is asked to call the CHP Bakersfield Area Office at 661-396-6600.

We extend our deepest condolences to Seeger’s family.

Overview on the Airport Drive Collision

In deadly hit-and-run cases, investigators closely examine the Hit-and-Run Statute. This law requires any driver involved in a collision resulting in injury or death to stop, identify themselves, and render aid. Failing to do so is a felony offense that carries severe penalties.

Because the victim was a pedestrian, the Pedestrian Right-of-Way Law also applies. It requires drivers to exercise due care to avoid hitting pedestrians, even when they are near the roadway’s edge. Investigators will likely evaluate lighting, speed, and visibility conditions along Airport Drive.

If excessive speed or careless operation contributed, the Basic Speed Law may be relevant. It prohibits driving faster than is safe for conditions such as darkness, traffic, or pedestrian activity. These statutes will help the CHP determine the circumstances surrounding the Airport Drive collision and identify the driver responsible.
