(Santa Ana, CA) A 31-year-old woman was killed Friday morning, December 19, in a Main Street accident after being struck by two vehicles.

The collision happened around 5:30 a.m. in the 3000 block of South Main Street, just south of East Dyer Road. Officers arrived to find the pedestrian, identified as Cecilia Janeth Sierra of Costa Mesa, unresponsive in the roadway. Orange County Fire Authority personnel pronounced her dead at the scene.

Police say Sierra walked eastbound across traffic lanes when a northbound vehicle struck Sierra. While lying in the roadway, a second northbound vehicle hit her and fled. The first driver stayed at the scene and cooperated. The hit-and-run driver is still at large as SAPD’s Collision Investigation Unit continues its work.

Analysis on the Main Street Accident

Because the pedestrian was struck twice, including by a vehicle that fled, investigators will review the Hit-and-Run Statute. This statute requires drivers involved in collisions that cause injury or death to remain at the scene, provide identification, and offer assistance. Leaving the scene greatly increases the seriousness of the offense and will be central to identifying the second driver in the Main Street accident.

Analysts may also apply the Pedestrian Right-of-Way Law. While pedestrians must not suddenly leave a curb or place themselves in the path of a vehicle, motorists must still use due care to avoid hitting someone crossing the roadway. Investigators will examine lighting, traffic flow, and driver sightlines to determine how the initial impact occurred.

Because the collision took place before sunrise, the Basic Speed Law may also be evaluated. This law requires drivers to travel at speeds that are reasonable for conditions, including darkness and limited visibility. Reviewing this statute helps clarify whether speed affected the drivers’ ability to respond safely in the Main Street accident.

    Guidance for the Family

If your loved one was the victim, you should request the SAPD collision report when it becomes available. It will help answer questions about how the incident unfolded and assist with insurance or legal steps.

You may also benefit from speaking with a wrongful death attorney who can explain options regarding funeral costs, emotional-loss claims, and other compensation.

Lean on friends, family, and Santa Ana community support resources during this painful time. The aftermath of sudden loss is overwhelming, and compassionate assistance can help guide you through the days ahead.

If you have any concerns about navigating the legal process surrounding this incident, call 866-883-4318 to speak with a lawyer.
