(Fullerton, CA) A Cal State Fullerton student-athlete identified as Lauren Turner has died from injuries sustained in an Association Road crash that occurred more than a month ago.
Turner, a sophomore from Tustin and a member of the CSUF women’s soccer team, was critically injured on September 27. While riding an electric scooter, a box truck struck her and her teammaate, Ashlyn Gwynn, near the intersection of Association Road and Yorba Linda Boulevard, according to the Fullerton Police Department.
Investigators said both women rode southbound in the No. 2 lane of Association Road when the crash happened. Paramedics rushed both to a hospital in critical condition. Turner died Friday, November 7, while Gwynn continues to recover at a rehabilitation facility in Houston.
In a statement, the CSUF athletics department remembered Turner as “the funniest, most charismatic, and loving teammate you could ever ask for.” A candlelight vigil will be held Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. on the field at Titan Stadium to honor her life and legacy.
Overview on the Association Road Crash
When scooters and larger vehicles collide, investigators often examine the Safe Passing Law. It requires drivers maintain a safe distance, at least three feet of distance, when overtaking lightweight riders. Investigators will determine whether the truck provided adequate clearance before the crash.
If visibility or road position contributed, the Basic Speed Law may also apply. It mandates that motorists drive at speeds that are safe for conditions, including proximity to smaller vehicles like scooters. Even moderate speed can be dangerous when a driver fails to see riders ahead.
In addition, the Shared Roadway Responsibility Statute applies. This law underscores the need for vigilance among all road users and will likely guide investigators in determining how the Association Road crash occurred.
