Castella, CA (October 7, 2023) A good Samaritan was struck by a vehicle and injured after stopping to help victims of a car crash, according to the California Highway Patrol. The accident happened on Interstate 5, near Castella around 5:30 a.m. on October 6th.

The Mount Shasta California Highway Patrol office stated that the crash occurred on southbound Interstate 5, just south of Sweetbrier Avenue. A 2019 Toyota Highlander drifted off the road and crashed into a tree. The vehicle overturned before stopping in the southbound lanes of I-5. On top of that, the tree they hit fell over and landed on the highway.

The good Samaritan saw the accident, pulled over, and got out to help the victims. While helping them, he was struck by another vehicle, who then fled the scene.

The California Highway Patrol said a 2002 Ford Ranger was heading south on I-5 and couldn’t avoid crashing into the tree that had fallen onto the highway.

The driver of the Highlander and his passenger were taken to Mercy Medical in Mount Shasta with non-serious injuries. The good Samaritan, however, was taken to Mercy Medical Center with serious injuries.

This accident, or series of accidents, is being investigated by the California Highway Patrol.

    Liability In Castella Pedestrian Accidents

Thousands of pedestrians are killed or seriously injured every year in pedestrian accidents. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “An estimated 137,000 pedestrians were treated in emergency departments for nonfatal crash-related injuries in 2017. Per trip, pedestrians are 1.5 times more likely than passenger vehicle occupants to be killed in a car crash.” There are a number of factors that could lead to a pedestrian collision including:

             -Speeding

             -Drunk driving

             -Driver distraction

            -Inclement weather

All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians. The family of any victim that died in a pedestrian collision may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the factors of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
